INDIANOLA, Iowa — The wins and losses may not have panned out the way Simpson baseball fans would have liked in 2017, but they couldn't have asked for a better finish to the season.
Pinch-hitter Trey Kehoe lifted a walk-off sacrifice fly to left field and Jared Herzog scored the winning run with a headfirst slide as the Storm beat Central 4-3 in game two of Saturday's season-ending doubleheader. Central won the opener 10-3, but Simpson was able to send its nine seniors out in style.
Jonathan Greiner had two hits, Josh Osborne hit a solo homer and Tanner Jansen tossed 2 2/3 innings of one-hit relief for the Storm (7-29, 4-20 Iowa Conference).
Jared Herzog led off the ninth with a pinch-hit single and went to third on Greiner's base hit down the right field line. Kehoe worked a full count against reliever Tanner Wood before sending a fly ball to left, his second walk-off of the season.
Jansen (2-2) struck out three without a walk in relief of Tyler Englehardt, who had his best outing of the season in the no-decision. Englehardt allowed three runs off eight hits in 6 1/3 innings, striking out three.
Simpson scored twice in the second inning for a 2-0 lead, getting a leadoff bomb to left from Osborne. Central led 3-2 before Andy Anderson laid down a perfect squeeze bunt with one out in the seventh to tie it.
Adam Richman homered in game one but the Dutch (20-20, 12-12) jumped out to a 7-1 lead after three and never looked back. Noah Stochl and Michael Reuter had three hits apiece and Zach Brown hit a home run.
Hunter Hillygus went 3-for-5 with a double to lead the Storm. Kehoe finished the game on the mound, going 6 2/3 and allowing three runs off seven hits.
