Richman’s quality start not enough in loss to Buena Vista

STORM LAKE, Iowa — Adam Richman gave the Simpson baseball team a complete-game effort on the hill but Devon Harms' go-ahead RBI single in the seventh inning held up as the game-winner and Buena Vista held on for a 2-1 win in the series opener Friday night.

Jake Hadaway held Simpson to one hit in eight innings and Dalton Mason came on for the save for the Beavers (20-13, 11-7 Iowa Conference). Hunter Hillygus had the only hit for the Storm (5-26, 2-17), scoring on a wild pitch to give Simpson a 1-0 lead in the second.

Noah Paper drove in the tying run on a single in the bottom of the second. The score remained 1-1 until Porter Sartor got things started in the seventh with a one-out single, stealing second before coming home on the single by Harms.

Richman (1-5) had the longest outing of his career, giving up two earned runs off eight hits. He tied a career-best with seven strikeouts.

Temperature at first pitch was just 43 degrees.
