Storm fall to Wartburg
INDIANOLA, Iowa — Mike Brown had three hits, Cody Hyler hit a three-run homer in a big seventh inning and Wartburg beat the Simpson baseball team 17-1 in a run-ruled game on Tuesday afternoon.
A trio of Wartburg pitchers kept Simpson off the board until the seventh inning as the Knights (16-9, 7-2 Iowa Conference) earned a sweep in the mid-week series after taking two last Tuesday in Waverly.
Trey Kehoe went 2-for-2 and Adam Richman doubled and scored in his only at-bat for the Storm (5-19, 2-10), who suffered their sixth loss in a row. Simpson stranded four runners on the basepaths, but were thrown out stealing once and grounded into two double plays.
Wartburg led 8-0 with two outs in the seventh when a costly error extended the at-bat. The Knights went on to score 10 runs in the inning, nine of which were unearned. Hyler hit his second home run of the season to close the frame with a shot over the left field fence.
Simpson pitchers combined to issue 11 walks in the game. Starter Curt Castenson (1-2) suffered the loss, giving up four runs on four hits in 2 1/3 innings.
