Storm drop doubleheader at Dubuque

DUBUQUE, Iowa -- The Simpson baseball team got out to a 4-1 lead in the getaway game but Dubuque rallied with a big sixth inning as the Storm dropped both games of Saturday's doubleheader, 7-0 and 9-5.

The Storm (5-18, 2-9 Iowa Conference) couldn't recover after using up five pitchers in marathon 13-inning loss in Friday's series opener. 

Simpson took advantage of three errors in the first two innings in game two on Saturday, scoring two in the first and two in the second to take an early 4-1 lead. Trent Dooley and Hunter Hillygus drove in runs in the first inning while Colson Frakes singled and scored on a Nathan Carlin double in the second. Carlin scored on Dubuque's third error.

Adam Richman cruised through the first five innings on the mound, holding Dubuque to three hits and striking out six. He got into trouble with a walk and two hits to start the sixth, and the Spartans (13-9, 7-2) rallied with four in the frame. 

Simpson's bats went cold, getting a final run in the eighth on a first-and-third rundown. Caylor Deeth suffered the loss in relief of Richman. 

Simpson didn't have an answer for Chase Kueter in the opener. He scattered six hits in eight innings while fanning 12. Trey Kehoe took the loss for Simpson, giving up seven runs -- all earned -- in 7 1/3 innings.
