Improbable comeback helps Storm split doubleheader with Loras

INDIANOLA, Iowa -- Trent Dooley drove in the game-tying run with a two-out triple, scored the game-winner one batter later and the Simpson baseball team came back from five runs down to beat Loras 10-9, splitting Sunday's doubleheader. Loras won game two 13-0 in eight innings.
Game 1
The Storm (4-11, 1-2 Iowa Conference) trailed 9-4 after the seventh inning but pulled within a run with four in the eighth. Simpson was down to its last out when Adam Richman walked, setting the table for Dooley. The senior blasted a shot to the wall, driving in Richman and evading the tag with a headfirst slide into third.
Pinch-hitter Trey Kehoe came to the plate next, hitting a chopper over the glove of pitcher Tyler Tomaka. Second baseman Luke Leibforth charged but couldn't field the slow roller cleanly, allowing Dooley to score for the walkoff win.
Jared Herzog went 2-for-5, driving in Simpson's first run of the eighth. Hunter Hillygus added a sacrifice fly and Truman Schmitt hit a two-RBI single that pulled Simpson within 9-8.
Simpson relievers Colin Sexton, Devon Veach and Nick Carlisle combined to allow just two runs off three hits over the final five innings. Sexton (1-0) earned the win, holding Loras hitless over the final 1 2/3 innings.
Simpson took a 4-1 lead in the third, scoring four runs off three Loras errors. The lead was short-lived as the Duhawks came back with six in the fourth.
Game 2
The Duhawks (8-7, 2-1) led from wire-to-wire in the nightcap, pounding out 13 runs off 14 hits. Danny Paluch went 3-for-5 and Sean Miller hit a pinch-hit, three-run homer.
Robert Hovey (3-0) got the win, holding Simpson to five hits over seven innings. Richman (1-2) took the loss, allowing six runs -- five earned -- off eight hits in five innings. He held Loras hitless over the first three innings.
Loras led 3-0 after the fifth but broke the game open in the sixth, scoring five runs off three hits and four walks.

Simpson travels to Nebraska Wesleyan for a three-game set Friday and Saturday, March 31-April 1. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. Friday in Lincoln, Neb.
