Storm drop doubleheader to Newbury

TUCSON, Ariz. — The Simpson baseball team dropped both games of its doubleheader against Newbury on Sunday at Kino Sports Complex, losing 6-5 in game one and 10-4 in the nightcap.

The Storm (0-4) built a 5-0 lead in the opener before Newbury tied it with a five-run sixth and scored the game-winner in the seventh. Simpson got behind early in the nightcap and never recovered.

Trent Dooley's RBI triple and Jacob Petry's run-scoring double sparked a four-run third to give the Storm a 5-0 lead. Starter Curt Castenson cruised through the first five innings, holding the Nighthawks without a hit before running into trouble in the sixth. Newbury scored five in the sixth then took a 6-5 lead on an error in the seventh. The Storm went down in order in their final at-bat.

The Nighthawks scored five unearned runs on three Simpson errors, building a 10-0 lead before the Storm put up four runs in the sixth. Truman Schmitt went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI and Jonathan Greiner added a pair of hits to lead the Storm. Adam Richman took the loss on the hill, allowing seven runs -- two earned -- in 3 2/3 innings.

Simpson is off Monday and returns to action Tuesday against North Central MN (10 a.m. CT) and Wabash (1:30 p.m. CT).
