Baseball bows out of IIAC Tournament

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Trey Kehoe carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning but Justin Lange kept Simpson's hitters off balance as the Storm lost to Buena Vista 6-0 on Friday, bowing out of the Iowa Conference Baseball Tournament.

Making just his second start of the season, Kehoe (0-3) allowed only two baserunners in the first four innings before running into trouble with the second-seeded Beavers in the fifth. Buena Vista got two runs off four hits, a stolen base, a throwing error and a sacrifice fly to take a 2-0 lead.

Run-scoring singles by Noah Paper and Devon Harms chased Kehoe in the sixth as Buena Vista opened up a 4-0 lead. The Beavers added two more insurance runs in the ninth.

Simpson managed just four hits against Lange (6-1), who struck out four in eight innings.

Bud Smith provided one of the hits, capping a remarkable tournament for the senior catcher. In three games, Smith went 8-for-15 with a double, two home runs and 10 RBIs. He went 5-for-6 with five RBIs in the 12-10 loss to Luther in the opener and went 2-for-5 with two home runs and five more RBIs in Friday's 10-6 win over Dubuque. He posted a 1.000 slugging percentage and threw out three would-be-basestealers on the weekend.

Austin Burlin's quest for .400 came up short as the senior rightfielder hit .383 for the year. He closed the season with a school record-tying 18 doubles.
