Reis tosses gem, hits grand slam in split at Dubuque

DUBUQUE, Iowa - Gage Reis threw a complete-game six-hitter in game one and hit a grand slam in game two as the Simpson baseball team split its final two games against Dubuque on Saturday, winning the opener 3-1 before losing a five-run lead in an 11-9 loss in the nightcap.

The Storm (6-15, 3-7 Iowa Conference) earned a split in the series. The Spartans (10-10, 3-5) actually won twice on the day, hanging on to win the second game of the series 5-2 after it was suspended due to darkness Friday night. The teams had to play the ninth inning Saturday before resuming the regularly scheduled doubleheader.

Reis struck out seven in game one and set a career-high with five RBIs in the nightcap. Austin Burlin singled in the sixth inning of game two, extending his hitting streak to 26 games dating back to last season.

Simpson gets one day off before hosting Central on Monday afternoon. The doubleheader with the Dutch was originally scheduled for Tuesday, April 5, but has been postponed twice.

Game One
Reis (2-3) picked up his second win in three starts, improving to 2-1 in the IIAC by striking out a season-high seven batters. He had a shutout through five innings before back-to-back doubles in the sixth gave Dubuque its only run. Reis responded by fanning 3 of 4 to close the game.

Reis helped out his own cause at the plate with an RBI single in the top of the first. Taylor Harmon added a run-scoring single in the first for a 2-0 lead and Trey Kehoe hit a RBI double in the fifth, finishing 2-for-4. Jacob Padilla struck out eight in six innings of relief work for Dubuque.

Game Two
Simpson led 9-4 after the sixth before Dubuque scored two in the seventh and five in the eighth to get the come-from-behind win.

Austin McWhite drove in the go-ahead run on a bases-clearing double off Tyler Englehardt as Dubuque batted around in the eighth. Daultan Gibson suffered the loss in relief.

Simpson trailed 2-0 after the first before the grand slam by Reis capped off a six-run, two-out rally in the second inning. Keegin Brannin singled and scored on a wild pitch and Luke Anctil singled in a run before Reis hit his second home run of the season.

Simpson led 6-4 after the fifth before RBI singles by Burlin and Bud Smith and a sacrifice fly by Reis made it 9-4.
