Storm drop pair to Wheaton in Arizona

TUCSON, Ariz. - The Simpson baseball team dropped both games of its doubleheader against Wheaton (Ill.) on Saturday, losing game one 5-2 and game two 11-6.

Andy Anderson went 4-for-5 with a double on the day to lead the Storm (1-3), who led by five runs in game two before surrendering 10 runs in the fifth and sixth. 

Simpson trailed 2-0 in the opener before Austin Burlin hit a solo homer and Andy Anderson roped an RBI double to tie it up in the second. The Thunder (3-2) responded with the go-ahead run in the third, as Kyle Mellinger stole third and scored on an overthrow.

Adam Richman (0-1) took the loss, giving up five runs on four hits in four innings. Jalen Sickels threw two innings of two-hit relief.

Simpson got up early game two, scoring a pair of unearned runs in the first before a big four-run third. Burlin, Greiner and Anderson all drove in runs on base hits to give Simpson a 6-1 lead.

Things went South in the sixth inning as Gage Reis was roughed up for seven hits and seven runs, including four doubles and a triple. Evan Ogden closed the rally with a two-run shot off Sawyer Ocheltree.

After tossing two innings of relief in the opener, Sickels got the start in game two. The lanky right-hander threw five solid innings, allowing three runs off six hits with four strikeouts.

Burlin, Anderson, Greiner, Bud Smith and Hunter Hillygus all had two hits in the nightcap.
