Anderson ties school mark for doubles in doubleheader split

STORM LAKE, Iowa – Nick Anderson tied a school record with three doubles and the Simpson baseball team pounded out 14 hits, beating Buena Vista 18-5 to split Saturday's doubleheader. Buena Vista won game one 5-2.

Simpson earned a split in the four-game series thanks to a crazy nightcap that saw the team set school records for walks (13) as well as strikeouts (16). And, in addition to Anderson tying the school record for doubles, Devan Wicks tied the mark for walks, getting four free passes.

The Storm (8-21, 4-14 Iowa Conference) scored seven runs in the fourth to take an 8-0 lead and added seven more in the ninth. Ten of the team's walks came in those two innings.

Anderson doubled to left and scored in the second, adding RBI two-baggers in the eighth and ninth. Jonathan Greiner drove in three runs and Jake Esdohr went 3-for-4.

Brock Borgeson (2-1) earned the win in relief, allowing 10 hits and five runs – four earned – in seven innings of work.

The 18 runs scored by the Storm were a season-high and the most by a Simpson team against Buena Vista since 1998.

Thomas Wisecup scored the go-ahead run for the Beavers (19-10, 9-9) in game one, coming home on a Simpson error in the fourth.

Simpson led 2-0 after the first, getting an RBI single from Wicks and a run-scoring fielder's choice by Bud Smith.

Starter Wes Orken (1-0) settled down after the first, holding Simpson to two hits with six strikeouts over the final six innings. Jake Scieszinski (2-4) took the loss, giving up three runs – two earned – on seven hits.
