INDIANOLA, Iowa – A pair of errors resulted in three runs in the opener and one bad inning made the difference in game two as Coe swept a doubleheader from the Simpson baseball team, 3-0 and 9-2 on Friday afternoon.
Two Simpson errors resulted in three unearned runs in game one, spoiling a solid mound outing by Jake Scieszinski. In the nightcap, Coe broke open a 1-1 game in the fifth, plating five runs off four singles, a walk and two balks.
Game 1: Coe 3, Simpson 0
The Simpson offense didn't have an answer for AJ Reuter and a pair of errors proved costly in Coe's 3-0 win.
Reuter (2-1) earned the complete-game shutout, allowing four hits and striking out five while allowing just two runners into scoring position. His outing overshadowed a great effort by Scieszinski (2-3), who also gave up four hits but surrendered three unearned runs.
A scoreless game after four, Coe scored twice on a fielding error that would have ended the fifth. The Kohawks added another run in the seventh thanks to a throwing error.
Craig Konrardy had a hit and an RBI for the Kohawks (16-9, 8-8 Iowa Conference).
Game 2: Coe 9, Simpson 2
Simpson got four solid innings from Daultan Gibson, but the lefty ran into trouble in the fifth and Coe took advantage of a pair of bunt singles to plate five in the inning en route to a 9-2 win.
Cole Tomlinson, Alex Zwanziger, Konrardy and Jeff Goerdt all singled to start the fifth, including bunt singles from Zwanziger and Konrardy. Goerdt drove in two with his base hit to left, Jack Hoffmann drove in a run and Coe added runs on a wild pitch and a balk.
Pinch-hitter Keegin Branin drove in a run on a groundout in the eighth, but the Storm (6-17, 2-10) mustered only one run after loading the bases with one out.
Connor Alberhasky (3-2) struck out 10 in eight innings of work. Gibson took the loss, surrendering five runs – all earned – on six hits in four-plus innings. Gage Reis and Jonathan Greiner had two hits apiece.

Simpson and Coe conclude their four-game series with a doubleheader Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. The first game is set for seven innings and the second will be a nine-inning contest.
