Storm drop pair of pitcher's duels to Central

INDIANOLA, Iowa – The Simpson baseball team held Central to three runs in 16 innings, but couldn't come away with a win in Tuesday's doubleheader, losing game one 1-0 and game two 2-1.

Simpson fell to 4-15 overall and 2-8 in the Iowa Conference while Central moved to 7-10 and 3-3 in league play.

Game 1: Central 1, Simpson 0

Matt Schissel threw a complete-game three-hitter and an RBI double by Kirby Coppess in the first inning proved to be the difference in Central's 1-0 win in the opener.

Schissel (1-1) out-dueled Matt Pennings, who suffered the loss despite allowing just five hits and one run. Pennings (1-4) struck out six and didn't issue a walk in seven innings.

Simpson's best scoring opportunity came in the fifth. Jonathan Greiner walked to lead off the frame and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Bud Smith. A Nick Anderson single and a walk to Jake Esdohr loaded the bases with two outs, but Gage Reis grounded into a fielder's choice to end the threat.

Game 2: Central 2, Simpson 1

Zeb Noel's complete-game effort went for naught as Simpson mustered just one run in the nightcap, losing to Central 2-1.

After allowing five hits and two runs in the first three innings, Noel (0-4) settled down, holding the Dutch to just three hits over the final six frames. Adam Lindell drove in a run in the first and Michael Reuter drove in another in the third, the only blemishes on the junior transfer's card.

Luke Anctil singled and scored on a Jake Scieszinski groundout in the fifth for the Storm's only score. Simpson left the bases loaded in the third and stranded runners in scoring position in the fifth, sixth and ninth.

Alex Dornacker (1-2) went five innings and allowed five hits in the win and Dakotah Wolken threw two innings of hitless ball in the save.
