Storm pitching can't slow Luther bats in doubleheader sweep

INDIANOLA, Iowa – The Simpson baseball team dropped the final two games of its four-game series with Luther on Saturday, losing game one 13-5 and game two 12-6. Luther took the series, 3-1.

Game 1: Luther 13, Simpson 5

Aldon Severson had two hits and two RBIs to spark a seven-run sixth inning, and Luther pulled away for a 13-5 win in the opener.

Carlos Pineda and David Lowe each had three hits and three RBIs for the Norse (8-6, 3-1 Iowa Conference). Severson tripled to lead off the sixth and drove in the final two runs of the inning on a single in his second at-bat. Luther held a 2-0 lead before the big frame.

Jake Scieszinski (2-2) held the Luther offense in check through the first five innings, spacing out six hits. He gave up back-to-back hits to start the sixth, though, and Luther rode that momentum the rest of the inning.

Jake Esdohr helped Simpson mount a three-run sixth with a leadoff single, but the hole was too deep. Esdohr, Gage Reis and Austin Burlin all finished with two hits and one RBI for the Storm (4-13, 2-6).

Game 2: Luther 12, Simpson 6

Severson came within a double of the cycle and Nate Beckman threw 6 1/3 shutout innings as Luther closed the series with a 12-6 win.

Severson went 3-for-3 with three runs and two RBIs, hitting an RBI triple in the second and a solo homer to lead off the fifth. Luther scored five runs in the second on the strength of three, extra-base hits, and added three more in the third for an 8-0 lead.

Reserve outfielder Devan Wicks gave the Storm offense a lift late in the game, blasting a solo homer to right in the ninth inning. Simpson scored four runs in the eighth, getting a two-RBI double from Luke Anctil.

Simpson didn't get on the board until the seventh, when Jonathan Greiner drove in Anctil on a double to the gap in right center.

Jalen Sickels (0-2) suffered the loss, allowing seven runs off six hits in 2 1/3 innings. Only six of Luther's 12 runs were earned as the Simpson defense committed four errors.
