Storm drop pair in Arizona

TUCSON, Ariz. - The Simpson baseball team took a 2014 regional qualifier to the wire but couldn't pick up a win, losing to Weslean (Conn.) 6-4 and Cornell 14-4 (seven innings) at the Tucson Invitational on Wednesday.

Jake Scieszinski had four hits against Wesleyan and Gage Reis drove in three runs against Cornell for the Storm (1-4), who were coming off a two-day layoff.

Wesleyan 6, Simpson 4
Led by Scieszinski's 4-for-4 effort at the plate, Simpson hung with the Cardinals, who came within a game of reaching the 2014 NCAA Division III Championship. RBI doubles by Reis and Devan Wicks tied the game 3-3 in the top of the third before Wesleyan added two in the home half. An RBI single by Jake Esdohr pulled Simpson within one in the fourth, but Jonathan Greiner was thrown out at home in the seventh, the Storm's last scoring opportunity. Reis took the loss on the mound, allowing 12 hits and six runs in seven innings.

Cornell 14, Simpson 4 (7 innings)
The Storm fell to former Iowa Conference foe Cornell for the second time this week. Cornell scored eight runs on Matt Pennings in the first, putting the game out of hand early. Reis hit a two-run homer in the seventh and finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs.
