Storm split doubleheader with Bethany Lutheran

TUCSON, Ariz. - The Simpson baseball team earned its first win of the season by splitting a doubleheader with Bethany Lutheran at the Tucson Invitational on Sunday, losing game one 1-0 in eight innings before taking the nightcap 3-2.

Jake Esdohr tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Gage Reis in the sixth inning, providing the game-winning run for the Storm (1-2) in game two. Zeb Noel's quality outing went for naught in the game-one loss.

Bethany Lutheran 1, Simpson 0
Noel struck out eight and allowed just three hits in seven innings, but couldn't get the run support he needed. Clay Anderson walked and scored an unearned run in the top of the eighth for the Vikings. Austin Burlin singled to lead off the bottom of the eighth but the threat ended on a double play.

Simpson 3, Bethany Lutheran 2
Jake Scieszinski allowed two runs and eight his over 6 1/3 innings and Brock Borgeson struck out the final two batters for the save. Bud Smith went 3-for-4 with an RBI and Esdohr went 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Simpson is off until Wednesday, March 11 when it takes on Wesleyan (Conn.) and Cornell.
