Big inning not enough against Coe

CEDAR RAPIDS - Nick Stein hit a home run and drove in four runs, top-seeded Coe scored eight runs in the seventh inning and beat No. 4 seeded Simpson 19-8 in the Iowa Conference Tournament on Thursday night at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

Colton Calvert (St. Charles, Iowa) hit a three-RBI triple as part of an eight-run sixth inning that gave the Storm (22-17) an 8-5 lead.

The lead didn't last long, as the Kohawks (30-10) capitalized on a big seventh inning for the second time in four games against Simpson this season. In the first game of their regular season series on May 6, Coe put up 10 on the Storm en-route to a 16-11 win.

The Storm will play at 7 p.m. Friday night with the opponent yet to be determined. Coe will play No. 3 seeded Wartburg at 1 p.m. All remaining games are at Vets.

Ryan Velvick had a three-RBI triple during Kohawk seventh, which erased an 8-6 deficit. He finished 2-for-4. In all, six different Kohawks had three hits as part of a 20-hit night. Scott DeAngelis and Sean Raisch each drove in three and Alex Korth (1-0) earned the win in one inning of relief.

Tyler Crandell (Ames, Iowa) went 2-for-2 and Dave Johnson (West Des Moines, Iowa) went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Chris Dorff (Urbandale, Iowa) went six-plus innings in the loss. The right-hander (6-6) allowed nine runs - seven earned - off 12 hits.

The first two runs of Simpson's eight-run sixth came off a walk and a wile pitch. Ethan Hale (Clive, Iowa) drove in a run on a single, Johnson walked in another and Justin Svehla (Lincoln, Neb.) brought a run in when he was hit by a pitch before Calvert's three-bagger down the right field line.
