Ethell, Dorff named First Team All-IIAC

INDIANOLA, Iowa – Senior third baseman Scott Ethell (Knoxville, Iowa/Knoxville) and sophomore pitcher Chris Dorff (Urbandale, Iowa/West Des Moines Valley) earned First Team All-Iowa Conference honors, the league office announced on Tuesday.

A transfer from Marshalltown Community College a year ago, Ethell finished the season second in the league with a .420 batting average, the best in the program since 2006. His 17 doubles tied for second in the conference and are the most by a Simpson player since 2004. Ethell hit five home runs for the Storm and had a team-high 41 RBIs. He ended his two-year career at Simpson with a .369 batting average, the sixth-best in program history.

Ethell earned Iowa Conference Male Athlete of the Week honors for the period ended March 28 after hitting .455 with two home runs, six RBIs and a double in Simpson's three-game sweep of Luther.

Simpson's most reliable hurler in 2010, Dorff came into his own during his sophomore campaign. He more than doubled his innings pitched from last year and saw his ERA drop from 11.47 as a freshman to a conference-low 2.64 ERA this season. After beginning the season as the team's closer, Dorff moved to the starting rotation late in the year, where he pitched two complete games.

He notched four saves on the year, third in program history and the most by a Simpson pitcher since 1999. He went 4-3, had a team-high 49 strikeouts and held opposing hitters to a .222 average.

Simpson went 23-18 in 2010, finishing the regular season fifth in the Iowa Conference. The Storm then put together a 3-2 run at the conference tournament, earning a third-place finish after falling to runner-up Wartburg in the semifinals. The run ended a two-year drought in which the Storm failed to win a game at the conference tournament.
