Storm swept in doubleheader
PELLA, Iowa - Mike Huyser turned in a quality start in game two, but the Simpson offense was held to three hits in a 3-0 loss as Central completed a doubleheader sweep of the Storm Saturday afternoon at Kuyper Athletic Complex.
The Dutch (24-8, 13-5 IIAC) won game one 9-4 despite committing six errors.
Huyser (3-3) went 4 2/3 in his game two start, giving up three runs off seven hits. But Central starter Joel Pulliam tossed a complete-game shutout, striking out five. Only two Simpson baserunners made it past second base.
The Storm (16-12, 10-7) trailed 2-1 in game one before Central pieced together a five-run fourth inning.
Simpson rallied in the seventh, taking advantage of three Dutch errors to score three runs. Drew Yarkosky (Albia, Iowa/Albia) and Brad Agan (Knoxville, Iowa/Knoxville) each reached on errors that resulted in runs in the inning.
Paul Brown (Polk City, Iowa/North Polk) took the game one loss, givning up seven runs - six earned - off nine hits in 3 2/3 innings. Scott Ethell (Knoxville, Iowa/Knoxville) collected three hits for Storm.
Simpson will conclude the three-game series with Central on Sunday. The two teams will begin at 2 p.m. in a game originally scheduled to be played Friday but was moved due to rain.
