Johnson takes home Player of the Week honors

INDIANOLA, Iowa – After scorching the competition with a .679 batting average last week at the RussMatt Greater Phoenix Invitational, the Iowa Conference recognized Simpson junior shortstop Dave Johnson as the league's Position Player of the Week for the period ending March 21.

A West Des Moines native and graduate of Valley High School, Johnson led Simpson to a 5-2 record during the week, driving in 16 runs with three doubles, four triples, and four home runs. His four home runs during the week sets a season career-high, achieved in only seven games.

Johnson drove in four-or-more runs on three occasions during the week, and went 5-for-5 in back-to-back games against Johns Hopkins and Dickinson. His five-hit efforts tie Simpson's single-game record for hits in a game. He fell a single away from hitting for the cycle in an 11-2 win against Augsburg March 15 and was a home run shy against Hopkins. His two home runs in a 19-9 win against Dickinson also tie a school record.

Coming off the trip to Arizona, Simpson's record sits at 6-5. The team opens its home slate Wednesday, March 24 when it hosts Nebraska Wesleyan in a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m.
