Bio

Just a handful of Simpson student-athletes can include the term “national champion” on their resume. Kimberly Griffin Powell is one them.

Powell and her teammates came out of nowhere to win the 1997 NCAA Division III National Softball Championship, a year after a third place finish in the Iowa Conference. The speedy Powell was a key piece to the Storm’s championship run, hitting .383 while leading the team in triples (five) and runs scored (41). Her 36 stolen bases that season are a school record.

Powell transferred to Simpson in 1996, making a huge impact on the program. She hit .371 during her career and set Simpson’s career record for stolen bases (67), despite playing just two seasons.

Originally from Albia, Iowa, Powell graduated from Simpson in 1998 with a degree in Elementary Education before earning a master’s degree from Viterbo in 2008.
