Bio
Few athletes in Simpson’s long history possessed as many talents as Mike Donnenwerth. Whether on the gridiron or the diamond, Donnenwerth was as well-rounded as they came.

A bulk of Donnenwerth’s success came on the football field. The 2003 Iowa Conference MVP and Gagliardi Trophy finalist led the Storm to a 9-1 regular season record and an at-large berth in the NCAA Tournament, shattering Simpson single-season records along the way. He threw for 3,461 yards, 32 touchdowns and averaged 41.31 yards per punt, all school records. He set a school record for completion percentage against Dubuque (12-for-13, 242 yards, 4 TDs) and against Upper Iowa he became just the second player in school history to surpass 500 yards passing (24-for-41, 516 yards, 6 TDs). He led three, game-winning drives in the fourth quarter that season, tossing a 26-yard touchdown pass to Dusty Kain on fourth down with 22 seconds left in a 20-13 win at Coe and helping the Storm snap a five-game losing streak to Central in a 28-21 win in Pella. At season’s end he held nearly every major career passing record at Simpson and was recognized as an All-American quarterback and punter.

Donnenwerth was also a standout on the diamond, earning first team all-Iowa Conference honors as a utility player in 2003 and 2004. At the plate, he was a career .331 hitter, ranking third in school history with 21 home runs. On the mound he posted a 15-10 mark with 100 strikeouts. As a senior in 2004, the all-region performer hit .385 with 46 RBIs and a school-record tying 12 home runs.

Originally from Sheffield, Iowa, Donnenwerth graduated from Simpson with a degree in Biology. He went on to earn his Doctor of Podiatric Medicine at Des Moines University in 2010.
